The skill which is used for communicating and interacting with peoples individually and group concern.

Communication Skills

The ability to communicate with superiors, colleagues, and staffs. It also includes the knowledge of effective interaction with peoples through social media and internet applications.

Categories of Communications:

  • Verbal communication

Communication involving word, spoken, written or signed. It depends on the clarity of the speech, remaining calm or focused, politeness, encouragement or positive reinforcement. These types of communication occur in the different context like training sessions, presentations, group meeting performance appraisal,  interviews, consulting engagements etc. For Clear announcing, explaining in difficult situations, focus on topic, paraphrasing, countering objection, selection of appropriate language, speaking confidently the verbal communication is used. Effective speaking is core part of verbal communications that depend on accents(regional and ethical based speech), volume, clarity, and variety(pace/speed, pitch-inflection-emphasis, pause) of the sounds.

  • Non-Verbal Communication

The communication occurs without words like body movement, space, time, touch, voice patterns, color, and layout or design of surroundings.

Classifications:

  • Kinesics/Body movement:

Facial expression and Eyes expression(happy, fear, anger, sadness), Gesture(physical movement of arms, legs, hands, torso, and head), Body Shape and Posture(ectomorph(thin, youthful and tall), mesomorph(strong, athletic, muscular and bony), and endomorph(fat, round and soft)), and appearance(cloth, hair, jewelry, cosmetics).

  • Proxemics/personal space-based communication:

Intimate (18-inch space), Personal(18 inches to 4 feet space), Social(4-12 feets space) and Public(above 12 feets space)

In Fixed space, the surrounding’s physical features are permanent walls, room sizes, and total building capacity.

In Semi-fixed space, the environment’s physical features are partially changeable.

  • Time Language: Concern the meaning of time present and past culture
  • Paralanguage: The non-lexical component of communication by speech such as intonation, pitch, speeds of speaking, hesitations of noise, gesture, sound volume, facial expression etc.
  • Active Listening:

It is self-awareness communication skills and Full concentration on the speech of speaker. It depends on the non-verbal signs(smile, eye contact, posture, mirroring/reflection of facial expression, distraction/attraction) and verbal signs(positive reinforcement, remembering, questioning, reflection, clarification, and summarization ). Active listening techniques(pay attention, show that you are listening, provide feedback, defer judgment, and respond appropriately).

Team Work

The process of collaboratively with a group of people in order to achieve a goal. It is more important in the organization for work efficiency, improve employ relation, increase accountability, and learning opportunities.
